Water put into a radiator from the tap, or rainbarrel will have trapped gasses in it. I would be sure it is combustion gasses before tearing out hair. A HC meter on a emissions tester will show what it is made of (your noes is also pretty good)
If it stops after two or three start and warmup cycles it is not broken. A cooling system pressure check at about 6 PSI max, left on for 20 hours will also blow coolant the otherway through a bad gasket/crack. Good luck.
