I wish I had just put in a new one. It wasn't the cost but the fact that I thought a reversed US made one would be preferable to a new imported one. The teeth on the unused side are definetly not beveled. I think that may be causing the bind, which causes power to stay to the starter, as you said. Will probably endup putting on a new one.
