560 Brake Drums

The last two evenings I helped a friend of mine put new brake seals and brakes on his 560. I noticed both brake drums were cracked from the center out to the rubber boot were the rod comes out. Is this fairly common? The brakes were packed full of oil, but the drums did not look like they had ever been too hot. Had a heck of a time getting the cast flange back in the transmission housing with the new O-ring installed. It sure looked like something I would normally break ;) Paul
