Jeff if your gen. is working I've got a trick I picked up from an old farmer. If everything is working right try an 8 volt battery. It will turn your starter faster, and you don't have to change anything. The last time I checked Tractor Supply had them for about $40. If your gen is down I see no problem with going 12 volt. A 12 volt gen. is best for looks, you can get one that will fit right in hole the 6 is sitting. I've got an H we use as a work tractor that has a delco alt. It was there when I got it, the other owner had mounted right to the frame rail looks ugly be it never fails to charge. So if you aren't worried about looks you may try one of them, they are cheap but good.
