If you use an alternator the amp gauge should read to 10-15% higher than the rated output of that alt. (usually stamped into the case).
The charging current can heat up and ruin a lesser meter. If using a 12v generator from IH/Delco, you can.
To switch ground to Neg (using an alt), reverse polarity of the amp gauge to keep it indicating in the correct direction.
