If you look at the notches in those shift rails, your lever end should be just about the size of the notch in one rail. Build it up by welding then grind it to a rectangle, very slightly rounded on the corners.

Tweeter, the problem you have right now is your tractor is in two gears at same time. The shift lever, being worn small slipped out of one rail notch before disengaging gear, then you put it in another gear. With the shift lever out you will notice each one of those rails have a forward, center and rear position. You can move them with a big screwdriver. All three rails must be in center position for neutral in transmission. You may find tractor is solidly locked in two gears. Two get it out you may have to tug either forward or backward on tractor. The best way to do this is an anchor vehicle and set of cable come alongs. You will have to play that one a bit, but it will come when presure is right.
