I rebuilt my 400D because it was leaking and tightening the gland didn't help. When I took it apart I discovered that the shaft was shot --- worn/rusted out, making the shaft out of round. Any tightening of the gland would only work for a short while.

The shaft only cost $179 through IH!!!! Pump was no longer available, rebuilt or new, so it was either used or rebuild it myself. All of the parts were available from IH. It cost me about $300 to rebuild it, and it works great now. The packing is available through IH for about $8 a piece, and it took 5 pieces for a complete repacking. If you only need packing, it should only take 1 or 2 pieces.
