I'm not sure exactly on the technical side of things, but my rough understanding is that it takes more oil to make a gallon of diesel than it does to make a gallon of gasoline. With oil prices so high it makes the diesel cost more. Of course there are also fewer refineries that make diesel than gasoline and that is why for a while after the hurricanes the diesel prices were out of sight.
