John: I think two seperate and different items have got injected into your discussion thread. They also have two separate functions. The one mounted to the coulter is a jointer, designed for use in sod plowing. It takes a wedge shaped section of sod off the left top side of each furrow being rolled. This material falls to the bottom of furrow completely burried. This stops grass from springing up quite so quickly in the vallies of furrows on plowed land. My dad would have used these on early fall plowing, and would have removed them on late plowing as frost would kill the grass anyhow.

The other item mounted to the plow beam is designed for covering trash like stover, tall grass, etc. They are called trash plates and are designed to bury high standing trash.

Two different functions and two different attachments.
