Maybe your carburetor is in need of attention. IF the float is damaged, the fuel level will be too high & cause rich running more noticible at high RPM"s. IF the needle & seat (float control falve) is leaking it will be more noticible when the engine is shut off. IF the air cleaner is not free-flowing (winter = ice in oil cup or some blockage in air passage) the engine will run rich. Try re-setting the high speed mixture screw with the engine warm, brakes locked, transmission in neutral; run at wide-open throttle and turn high speed screw (bottom of carb) in until engine begins to slow (lean) and turn out until engine begins to slow & smoke (rich). Now set the screw 1/2 way between too rich & too lean and add 1/2 turn out for power. With a heavy engine load plowing or such the screw can be turned out just a bit for a little more power. Also check ignition timing as late spark can cause similar problems. These older machines need additional adjustments from the operator to match the situation. No computers to do the job for us!!

Oil Bath Air Filters - by Chris Pratt. Some of us grew up thinking that an air filter was a paper thing that allowed air to pass while trapping dirt particles of a particles of a certain size. What a surprise to open up your first old tractor's air filter case and find a can that appears to be filled with the scrap metal swept from around a machine shop metal lathe. To top that off, you have a cup with oil in it ("why would you want to lubricate your carburetor?"). On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
