The main difference between the 1086 and 1486 is the injection pump setting. Unfortunately, the extra horsepower of the 1486 is too much for the transmission design, so unless the previous owner(s) really babied the 1486, you're likely to have a major transmission problem looming on the horizon. The 1586 has still more horsepower, another turn of the injection pump screw, but its transmission was designed to handle the additional power. Unfortunately, to fit heavier gears, they had to eliminate a gear, so you've only got 12 forward speeds, not 16. So long as the 1086's pump wasn't turned way up, and assuming the tractors were used and abused to their full potential, the 1086 is probably going to be in the best condition internally.

On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
