It's not that the cam gear would break, it's that the factory live pump won't even fit on pre-1950 Ms. The front engine cover is different on the newer models.

Two-way hydraulics is a matter of plumbing and the right kind of hydraulic valve. You're looking for an open center, double-acting spool valve such as the Tractor Supply #1820128. Mount that in a convenient locaton where you can easily operate it.

Run a hose from the front pressure port of your belly pump (or the port all by itself on the one side), to the IN on the valve. Run another hose from OUT on the valve to the hydraulic filler tube under the gas tank. You can add a T for the hose, or just plumb it straight in, but keep in mind that you need to tear the system apart to add or check the fluid level if you choose to plumb it straight in.

Now, run two hoses from the work ports on the valve to the rear of the tractor. Add quick-disconnect couplers, and you're done. To operate the system, simply pull the rod for the belly pump valve back and lock it into place, then operate the control lever on the spool valve.
