Oil level thanks

Thanks folks, I saw those two funny looking things sticking out of the oil pan and because I didn"t know what they were I didn"t mess with them. How do they operate? Do you turn them or pull them. I"m real reluctant to break something because I don"t know how easy it is to get parts. I"m saving up to buy a manual.
