#1 - Yes, fifth gear is inside of fourth gear. #2 No, it doesn't slide on farther when you turn the wheel. I can't because it hits on the lower counter shaft "constant mesh gear". #3 I don't believe the shifter ball is worn. I did put the deck plate on and even the shifter. Then shifted it into fifth gear, but experienced the same problem. The gear did not properly engage.
