There's no magic involved, so one of two things is going on:

1. Your alternator is no good.

2. You don't have it wired up "just like Bob's diagram."

Please don't take offense to #2. It's called "rookie mistakes." If you're not experienced at wiring a tractor, then you will likely make a mistake in the wiring somewhere. You will then spend hours and hours going over the wiring, saying "Yep that's right," without even noticing that bad connection or wire in the wrong place. Happens to all of us, and a second pair of eyes usually catches the problem.
