Here's a trouble shooting procedure for ignition systems using conventional points. Hal No Spark?/ First be sure distributor cap is Dry & Clean. This is for battery/ coil ignition systems.
1. Is there battery voltage at the coil? Use a test lite or volt meter. 2. Is there battery voltage at the coil? Use a test lite or volt meter. 3. Remove distributor cap, rotor & points cover, remove the coil wire from the cap and put it within 1/8-1/4" of a good ground. 4. With points closed & ignition switch on, snap the points open a few times & watch for spark at the coil wire end. 5. No spark: may have dirty or burnt points, bad condenser or a bad coil. Coil primary (battery voltage) wire to distributor from coil must be attached to the - negative terminal on the coil if the battery is - negative grounded. You need to check to make sure your plug wires are in the correct firing order on the distr. cap. This could be the problem with the popping sound you get. Going CW your wires should be like this if rotor turns CW: 4----1 2----5 6----3 If it turns CCW should be like this: 1----4 5----2 3----6
