300u steering gear box , checking oil?

Where do you check the oil level for the steering gear box on a 300u (mine has power steering)? Also, where do you add oil and what kind of oil do you use?
I thought the steering gear box oil was supplied by another supply, i.e. the hydraulic system. I am thinking I was wrong.
