Is the timing set correctly? Sounds like The spark is having to jump too large of a gap between the rotor & the distributor cap terminals. With installation of the electronic ign., the increased voltage is capable of eroding & burning the bakelite & contacts in the cap. Could possibly be such a thing as the timing gears being 1 tooth off. Check by setting front pulley at timing pointer & see where the rotor points in the distributor cap.
