John, I certainly agree, it (ammeter) will read correct if its "wired correctly" but if the IGNITION SWITCH is wired/fed off the starter switch from the "battery side" as you claim, the ammeter WILL NOT INDICATE/REGISTER the current draw of the coil (around 4 amps). In order for the ammeter to indicate/register current it must flow through it, but if the ignition switch is served from the starter switches battery side (same as ammeters input supply terminal) its current IS NOT REGISTERED by the ammeter since its current does NOT flow through it. If the Ignition is wired off the starter switches battery side instead of the load side of the ammeter, with the tractor not running if you turned on the ignition the ammeter WOULD NOT REGISTER MINUS 4 AMPS as it should if it were wired correct. The ammeter is supposed to register the net current flow into (charging) or out of (discharging) the battery which is why the ammeters input supply side is wired ONLY to the battery/starter while the ammeters other load side feeds all loads (lights and ignition) PLUS connects to the gennys output via the Cutout Relay. Hope this helps clarify things, great fun discussion, take care yall John T Nordhoff in Indiana

Top that off with an old set of '36 Ford headlight shells bolted to the hood. Pretty unlikely for a car... but for a tractor, this is pretty normal. It seems that more often than not they a
