I think my main problem was that I put a tee fitting on top of the fill pipe and the cap right on top of that. If I would have extended the pipe above the tee, then put the fill cap it probably wouldn't have been a problem. I think I had it overfull as well because the implement I was using it on needed more oil to lift up all the way.

Extend the pipe above the tee and you'll probably be fine.
