M Farmall clutch

Just bought a 1943 Farmall "M" The gears rake when I put it in gear. The clutch engages close to the bottom, yet it has very little free play at the top. The adjustment rod is screwed out about as far as it can go. Any ideas on what might be wrong before I have to remove the liftall pump to get a look at the clutch ect.The clutch does not slip and there are no unusual noises except for the gears grinding when I put it in gear. Thanks for your help!!
