rek, I have to agree with Allan. If you dead ground the gennys Field post that allows max charge condition which is fine if used ONLY for enough time to fully charge the battery. HOWEVER over charging n out gassing n boiling over a battery is harder on it then undercharging, and once shes charged the rate ought to back off.

A) Does the tractor have a full fleged 3 terminal (BAT GEN FLD) Voltage Regulator or the simple 2 wire (BAT GEN) Cutout Relay and the light switch field current control ???? (see below)

1) VR SYSTEM: One thing you may wanna try regardless is to insure the VR (if thats what it has) has a good bond/connection to frame ground/gennys case cuz if none exists or its corroded or resistive, even a good working VR cant do its job!!! Run a good jumper wire from the VR's metal base to a good frame ground n see if she works okay then???? If so repair that n do away with your cheat ground method.

2) CR SYSTEM: If it has the simple 2 wire (BAT GEN) Cutout Relay and uses the light switch field current control method and she dont charge, the light switch may be bad or its resistor is bad or it doesnt have a good to dash bond/connection or the wires open from the gennys Field post up to the light switch !!!!!!!!!!! If the switch is good and it has a good to dash ground, thats where the gennys Field post gets it return current path for it to charge, the same thing that happens when you provide that cheat ground at the gennys Field post. I would trace the wire from the gennys Field post up to and through the switch and insure the switch has a good ground if its the 2 wire CR system that uses the light switch to troubleshoot that circuit !!!!

From what you told us it seems your genny (the more expensive component) is fine so if alllllll connections are good and the wires good from the gennys Field to the switch and the grounding (light switch or VR) isnt the problem, Id be investing in a new VR or light switch as needed.
