Makes them easier to turn. Try spreading them out and see how hard it is to turn them. My dad always spread the wheels for the first cultivating pass. Keeps the dirt from covering the plants. It sure builds up the tricepts. The 'V' also improves front stability, keeps the front end from swaying left to right.
