The TA was the first power shift offered on a tractor. It reduced ground speed about 30% without the need to actually clutch and shift. Its intended use was in heavy fieldwork such as plowing. Hit a "hard" spot and pull the TA lever back, when you get back to "regular" ground you push it forward. All without stepping the tractor, lifting the plow, backing up and then shifting to a lower gear. A huge leap forward – or so it seemed. The mechanical TA had problems due mainly to lack of maintenance and misuse. It needed to be adjusted periodically to account for wear - if not it quickly destroyed itself. When used the shift needed to be fast - some operators tried "easing it" in and that also caused premature failure. Having the TA engaged while "free wheeling" down a hill also caused it to fail. It was a good idea but it wasn't properly implemented by IH. 50 years later the TA is seen as a detriment to an older IH's resale then as a compliment.
