Andy, This happened to me once on my 450D when the float/needle valve must have stuck open in the carburetor after switching to diesel cycle. Closing off the gas valve at the tank stopped the pinging. It's only done this once in the last 2 years. I told this to an IH mechcanic and he said he saw the same thing happen to an MD many years ago. The fix is to replace the needle valve and seat. Turn off the gas and if the pinging stops, thats your problem. It does ping very loud.
