Take a piece of 1/2" square bar stock and an adjustable wrench with you and screw out the transmission oil fill plug which is on top of the transmission near the shifter. Use a flashlight to look into the hole to see if: a) the transmission has oil and 2) if it has oil, what color is the oil (check after running the tractor around in the yard for five or ten minutes). If the oil is white/creamy this indicates water has gotten into the transmission. I bought a 140 thinking everything was peachy and later when I was changing the fluids (always do that first thing when I buy a used car, truck, tractor) found out the transmission had no oil. The rear seal can go bad on that series tractor and when it does, the transmission won't hold oil.

Oil Bath Air Filters - by Chris Pratt. Some of us grew up thinking that an air filter was a paper thing that allowed air to pass while trapping dirt particles of a particles of a certain size. What a surprise to open up your first old tractor's air filter case and find a can that appears to be filled with the scrap metal swept from around a machine shop metal lathe. To top that off, you have a cup with oil in it ("why would you want to lubricate your carburetor?"). On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
