Noisy in Belt Pulley Housing

I have a Farmall Super A, 1953. There is a grinding noise in the pulley housing. Sounds as if there is no fluid in housing. I took loose the inspection stud and it is full of oil and there seems to be very little play between gear teeth. To eliminate the outer bearing, I took it off and turned the shaft by hand and still get the same noise. I have also heard that the Super A's were naturally noisy. Any truth to this or am I in for a surprise? Never been into one, any help appreciated.
