None of the combo rear lights I've ever run across have used sealed beams. Rather they all have had a large, bayonet base bulb (like a #1156) for the work light, and a small instrument panel bulb (#53?) under a red "jewel" for the tail light. Only a single wire runs to the rear light - a rotary switch on top of the lamp housing selects which bulb lights up. (Note that the rear lamp lights "bright" in both the D and B settings on the headlight switch)
