I am not a paint chemist, so I'm not qualified to specifically answer your question. Alkyd enamel is also known as synthetic enamel. I think it was actually developed in the 30's, so it is OLD technology. I don't know if acrylic enamel, which is somewhat better, was sold in the 60's or not. Then later came the urethanes. There are still some GOOD acrylic enamels out there if you can find them, but they may go the way of the dodo bird, being replaced by the urethanes. Two examples are PPG Delstar and DuPont Centari. These two acrylic enamels are actually better than the "economy" urethanes, such as PPG Omni and DuPont Nason, so I have been told.
