You can go by engine serial # to find out what it was originaly.The # is on left front side of block above injection pump and just below head and may have engine size stamped there before serial #. If no serial # it may be replacement block.Think they used 248,264 and,281 but I don't have the serial # breakdown to when they changed. Some may have been called 6 A .Trouble is if it was rebuilt and it was 248, 3 7/8 inch bore it could be replaced with 4 inch and if it was 264, 4 inch it could be replaced with 4 1/8 which is 281.The only sure way to know is take it apart.
