I learned the hard way about 20 years ago about shutting fuel off. Had a boat motor with six carbs on it. Left it for 6 mos with fuel off but had not run the carbs dry. All six were badly gummed up (Florida).
Now anything I own, riding mower, generator, boat motor, 4 wheeler, motorcycle, snowblower,the fuel gets shut off while running and I run the carb dry. And they all get Stabil treated gas. Downside is once in awhiule you forget to go back and turn off the ignition. But a battery charge is a lot simpler than a carb clean out.(or six)
