If you are using a 12v system, and your coil is still 6v, and you do not have a resistor, then your points will wear/burn pit excessively. If you have a 12v system with a 12v coil with "external resistor required" on the coil, and no resistor, it will act just like a 6v coil above, and burn points. If you have a resistor, and it is wired correctly, and are still burning points, two possible reasons are 1) there is oil or grease getting on them, or the coil is beginning to fail drawing more current than it should. The bushing on the dist cam should have no detectable play in it perpendicular to the axis ov the dist cam.
