When I read your post at work last night I was hoping somebody else would reply before I got home and could answer. I so rather can tell somebody,"Oh, don't worry about it." I don't think that fits here. You could well be right about the shifter forks. That wold explain the intermittance; they don't always rub on whatever it is. Or it could be one of the bearings on the drive shaft. I believe both the belt pulley drive and the constant mesh gear for the transmission run directly off that shaft and some really unusual side load torque could have wrecked one of them. Whatever it is you couldn't have picked an easier tractor to work on. With an IH or I&T service manual (my own preference is both) to go by it's an "anybody can do it" to take the transmission cover/deck off and see what needs done. Good luck, and in case you've given up on a response I'm going to Cut, Paste, and email this to you. Except the picture.
