You can look up serial numbers right on this website. Take a look at the column of links to the left hand side of this page. Click on Serial Numbers, then select Farmall. As was said earlier, yours is a 1947, not a 1942.

To turn the engine over with a crank, you put the crank on the shaft sticking out the front of the tractor. You push in on the crank and turn it until it engages the front pulley on the engine. It's not rocket science, and you should be able to figure it out pretty easily.

The engine should turn over fairly easily with the crank. If you can't turn it over, WALK AWAY. Unless you really really want to do some serious learning, you do not at this time have the mechanical aptitude to deal with a stuck engine. You would be better off finding a running tractor to start with.
