I don't know what's avalible and what's not for those old gas-start diesels, but I agree with your mechanic about staying away, unless you've got a ton of money to play with. Nothing can be taken for granted with those engines. Many were abused, the cylinder head was very prone to cracking if the engine was not allowed to cool down on gas before shutdown and not switched back over to diesel after shutdown to close the decompression valves. To me, they look like a pain to work on. If you're looking for a reliable working tractor and like M-450's, get a gasser. If you want a working diesel in that size range, get somthing like a 656, 666, or 686. If you've got the time and money to really fix one of those gas-start diesels up right, go for it. They're one of the neatest tractors ever built in my opinion.
