B 414 PTO

The PTO shift lever on my Dads 414 is not moving the PTO into gear. We took it out and nothing seams to be broken. I can put it in and out of gear by reaching in with a screw driver but we can't get the shifter to go into the slot. Has anyone dealt with this problem before? Thanks for any information. David
