Well I for one would pass. I started mowing alfalfa Friday with a older, worn IH 1000 mower. It didn't work well at all, skipping plugging, riding over. So I replaced about 10 sections, ledger plates on the old single low back guards. Reset all the shims and hold downs. Very little difference, I'm going crazy. Asked a neighbor to look at it. He looked at the mess in the field and then after looking at the mower he said "it's the guards, they are worn out. Even though I had the sections flat on the plates, there was about 1/4 up to 3/8 inch open space above them.
A trip to IH store all new double high back guards, new serrated sections to match them as they are smooth plates. Went through that field like hot knife through butter. Those old guards are just not designed right to be tight, and though the manual says you can Adjust them down"
I tried and broke 2/3 before they were close to snug.
When those old style are worn, toss em, don't repair them.
How about MAGMAN doing a mag rebuild say twice a day?
