Looks like a pretty straight old 400. I have had two or three of them over the years and really like them. I really don't know what to tell you about the battery situation. That tractor had a 6 volt system on it originaly. If the conversion was done neatly and correctly I don't think that would have anything to do with the battery draining down. You can check the ground but I doubt that is your problem. I would look at all the wiring and see if anything looks suspicious. If not get a test light and see if the coil has juice going to it when the key is off. I am a little suspicious that when someone converted it to 12 volt they hooked something up wrong that is draining that battery. By the way that key and switch in the picture is original equipment. If it works I would keep it. I don't think that switch is available from CNH anymore.
