I had a Case VAC that I converted to 12 VDC. The alternator that I used was a self exciting Delco alternator. It did the same thing. I checked the single wire going to the alternator and found that it was drawing juice from the battery. You can either install a diode, make sure you wire it correctly because they are poled, or you can install a toggle switch and that should solve your problem, if it has an alternator like the one I described.
