Don't give up so easily, Don. If the belt drive is coming from someone who took it off a tractor, the gear is still on their tractor, and they don't need it any more. If it is a Super C, you could arrange with the owner to swap the belt drive shaft with you, yours without the gear, his with (This would be a LOT easier than removing the gear from the shaft). The shaft is easily removed, engaging with the forks of the on/off lever.
