Not unusual. My Super H, also my Minnie Mo U do this when they are warm. Cause I believe is the very low airflow thru the carb when cranking. It does not pick up enough gas from the main jet to fire the engine if the throttle plate is partially open. However if the throttle is closed there's enough flow thru the carb idle circuit to provide the right fuel mixture. (The effect I believe is aggravated by the lousy quality gasoline we have today.) Sometimes opening the main fuel jet a half turn or so will help. However this may also make the engine run too rich at speed (wastes gas and fouls plugs). Or you can "snap" the choke closed then quickly open again when you first hit the starter. However easiest thing is simply start the engine with the throttle closed. It always works on mine!
