We have a 400 6-row cyclo-air planter. The air blower is PTO driven via a shaft and a belt step-up arrangement. It works good... the problems we encountered with a couple of skips and some double plants were due to some poor adjustments and worn brushes inside the drum. As far as horsepower requirements, our 544 handled it very well at 4.5 mph (3rd gear), the M would pull it in 2nd gear (hydraulics were too weak to lift with fertilizer). Dad pulled it one year with the 1086 and went 6 mph and had way more skips and doubles. Brother-in-law has an 800 8-row... what I remember from the brief time I was around it is that the fan was hydraulic driven from a PTO pump and the drive system for the drum seemed better/more accurate. Kinda foggy beyond that...
