I would hook a battery charger to the battery and see if it will charge. Even if the alternator was damaged, the tractor should start with a fully charged battery. Once you have a fully charged battery check for battery voltage at your coil with the ignition switch on. If the tractor starts hook your volt meter leads across the battery terminals and run the engine at 3/4 throttle. Should have around 7.5 volts.
