There’s certainly a chance the short at the battery toasted the alternator. However the engine should still start/run even if the alternator is bad. What I suspect happened is the brief short damaged the wiring somewhere between the starter switch, ammeter and ignition switch First thing I'd do disconnect/tape the wire a the BAT terminal on the regulator (in case the alternator has suffered from shorted diode or something). Then charge the battery and try starting the tractor. If it still won't fire turn the ignition on and check for voltage at the ignition side of the coil primary (the side NOT connected to the distributor). If voltage is present the tractor should run - the "no fire" problem is elsewhere. However if no voltage is seen, you’ve got to find/repair a break in the wiring to the coil. Good luck!
