Once again I gotta agree with the tractor vet! Your statement "it just seems to be starving for gas after about 1/2 hour of use" is a classic symptom of a temperature sensitive coil failing after it heats up. Another quick test: Next time you run the tractor, when it begins "starving" for gas try working the choke. If you find a choke position where the engine runs better you've got a fuel starvation problem. However if it runs the same (or worse...) with the choke partially pulled it says the problem is ignition.
