From the number I'd say it sounds like it's the old 549 cu in gas engine. Was put in a LOT of trucks in it's day. Very popular before the diesels took over in heavy trucks. I think the block was also the basis for the 9 liter diesel used in trucks and the DV-550 used in 1468 & 1568 tractors. As I recall, IH quit making gas truck engines around 1975 or '76. Maybe somebody else could say for sure.
