Mine was doing that and it turned out to be a piece of an old gasket in the gas tank. It would occasionally get sucked on top of the gas outlet in the tank and would stop; after sitting for a bit the gasket would float off, and it would start and run fine again until the next time. There was a lot of tree bark in that tank too...50 years of checking the gas level by putting a stick down in the tank. Could be an obstructed gas tank cap vent. Good luck,
