55, The 4 pole VR's with the L terminal are supposed to regulate somewhat better in preventing possible overcharge condition when running long periods with the lights on according to articles I've read. Without the L terminal, all the gennys output current passes through the VR's cutout relay, but if lights are fed from the L terminal, some current can be by passed direct to them without having to pass through the cutout relay on its way up to the ammeters load terminal where they would be hooked otherwise it appears, I need to sit down with a 4 pole VR diagram and work all this through, but I believe thats how it functions and is one of its advantages over the 3 pole VR. Again, even though it would work without the L terminal (feed lights from ammeter) I would still use the L terminal for the reasons I described above, or even if theyre not exactly correct, theres gotta be other engineering reasons why they were developed as an improvement over the older 3 pole units. Best wishes n God Bless, let us know how it works out John T
