I THINK YOUR BANDS ARE SLIPPING.ONE TIME MY 300 UTILITY PTO STARTED TO SLIP AS I STARTED TO BALE HAY.I FOUND THE HANDLE /LEVER MOUNTING BOLTS HAD COME LOOSE.THE PTO ON THIS TRACTOR HAD NEVER SLIPPED BEFORE OR SINCE IN 7000+ HRS.IT STOPS INSTANTLY WHEN I TURN IT OFF;IN FACT THE SWINGING KNIVES ON THE BUSHHOG WILL SWING INTO EACH OTHER IT STOPS SO QUICK.
I HAVE BUSHHOGGED WHAT YOU DESCRIBE IN 2ND GEAR WITH MY 300 MANY TIMES (OLD 6' WOODS CADET 72 BUSHOG),ALTHO 1ST GEAR IS EASIER,BUT I DON T HAVE TO STOP.YOUR PTO IS SLIPPING FOR WHATEVER REASON.
