There is a small amount of clearance at the bottom, and an even greater amount at the top. This baffle is what makes the rocks and hardware method of cleaning the tank a bad idea. Contrary to what some folks think, it is next to impossible to remove all of the rocks and other assorted junk, and the clearance at the bottom is so small that some of this stuff will get lodged in that gap, and you will never get it out.
